Saturday nights

I dedicate tonight to the people in our lives with whom we can easily live, and well…

I spent the evening first playing board games with people I don’t really know, but who also lived and worked in Japan, and then with a friend and her dog and cat, just hanging together at her apartment.

At no point in the evening did a television (or Netflix or whatever) come into play – for eight hours of enjoyment, I spent time with people, and we all had a wonderful time… and, you know, I didn’t even notice the whole tv part until just now…. cool…

How often are these normal evenings for us nowadays, let alone Saturday nights?

Driving home, I passed through the drunken playground that seems to be the Washington Avenue bar strip here on a Saturday night, and I was practically bombarded with the stupidity and danger that comes with the mixture alcohol, newly adulting stress, and the desire to be liked, all so prevalent in our early-twenties folks right now…

I was not disappointed at having missed out on that scene (not only tonight, but ever)…, and I might even have felt a hint of – was it pity? – something for many of the people I saw.

‘How was your weekend?’

You know that feeling when things really don’t go the way you’d anticipated them going, – any of the many scenarios you’d imagined – yet they still worked out okay in the end?  I’m in the middle of it right now.

It’s such an odd feeling, really.  It isn’t that I hadn’t imagined it going anywhere from horribly to wonderfully.  I think it’s just that I’d expected more of a solid, clear result from this weekend’s events.  I thought that I’d know for certain how I felt about it by the end of it.  And yet, here I am, wondering how to describe it all.  Parts totally sucked, parts were totally blah, parts were good, and parts were wonderful.  It was all in there, I guess – practically every scenario I’d imagined had at least a little piece of itself presented during the weekend.  And that made for an overall okay weekend.  (I’m still secretly waiting for some kind of panic attack to ensue, or something ridiculous, it feels.)

I guess it was kind of like my diet has been recently, actually.

… and that brings me back to what I was sharing just the other day… no wonder my weekend went as it did, when my food and thoughts have been kind of like that recently, going all over the place, but averaging out to a reasonably contented middle ground, without being my desired stupendous.  Hm.

Is it tomorrow already?

Sometimes, I fear tomorrow.  Not because I fear the dawn or what is to come, but because I worry that I have not done enough with today, and that the feeling will drag into tomorrow, as well.  I am exhausted and I want to sleep, yet I have lain awake (just barely) in my bed for over half an hour already.  I accomplished much today, both physically and mentally, and I had a wonderful time with my mom, sharing most of the day with her, loving one another well and clearly.  But today is Saturday, and tomorrow is Sunday.  I have so little time during the weekdays right now, that I feel a compulsion to make each weekend fully “worth it”.  Today was great, and yet I worry that Monday will arrive, and I will wish I had done something more over the weekend.  To be fair, though, I typically wish that I had had more sleep over the weekend, more so than wishing I’d done anything else.  How odd… perhaps it is best, then, that I sleep now.
