So close

Today has been Friday – Friday, the 13th, actually, which felt very ironic what with all the gorgeous sunshine and cool air today… until a crazy cat fight broke out in our front yard. At first, I thought it was kids playing. Actually, I thought it sounded like cats moaning and groaning, but kids made more sense, so Is plowed for the kids idea as being more realistic. Then I thought it was kids crying. Then I wondered what on Earth was happening, since the noises weren’t stopping, and crying kids would have drawn a crowd, if not at least their parents, right?!

Sure enough, when I opened the door, my original thoughts were proven correct: two cats were at the end of our walkway, quickly splitting apart, likely spooked by my opening the front door. One cat was just sitting in the walkway, back ramrod straight, acting like nothing had been going on. (Such a cat, I know.) The other was trotting quickly into the dark street. Oh, yeah, I thought, This is most definitely a cat fight. Not kids. Nope. Nuh-uh.

I changed the battery in the front camera, and was bummed to find that none of it had been captured on the camera, not even the sounds, due to the dead battery. After I replaced it and went back inside, only a minute or two passed before I could hear the ‘yelling’ again, though it was not as loud this time. It wasn’t loud enough for the camera to record this time, which was a bummer. I had wanted to share this absurdity with my man and my mom.

Nonetheless, the fight moved farther down the street, and even got some men yelling in the mix at one point. The cats calmed down briefly, then reconvened a while later in our neighbor’s side yard, which I discovered when I started getting ready for bed and was on that side of the house. I went out front just to see if I could see them, but I couldn’t. I could certainly hear them, though, both with their wailing and with there muffled movements when they were actually pausing on the growls for a bit.

Anyway, it was well after all of this that it occurred to me that today is Friday, the 13th, and we had a crazy and bizarre cat fight on our street tonight! Wie cool!

Anyway, happy Friday and weekend to you all!

Thank you for these funs and these blessings, God. Amen.

Bug bites

Okay, these bug bites are kind of genuinely starting to make me nervous. Sure, some of them started to stop itching and hurting today… but some are still itching and hurting, and it almost seems like more have popped up than I originally had…

I will catalog them well and keep track. And I will check with my mom tomorrow on what her thoughts are, as well as my man and his thoughts.

God, help me be healed from these, please. In your name, I pray with hope. Amen.

Talk about adventure…

This morning, as we went to a natural park for hiking, her mom’s car went nuts with notifications that the tires needed attention. These are brand new tires. We stop at a gas station. They don’t have Nitrogen (N2), which the tires have. The pressure is acceptable for the short distance we still have to go. So, we stop at a tire place after the hike, and they fill the tires the needed amounts with N2. Yay. Phew(!).

Tonight, we go in my step-sister’s car into the mountains, so I can see the mountains up close. It is great. We then go to a Tim Horton’s, because I’d never been to one, and it supposedly is amazing. No offense to anyone, as it was tasty, but I gladly will stick to Shipley Donuts for all my doughnut needs.

We head home… her boyfriend leans out the open window, as though he is tossing up his Tim Horton’s. “Que pasó, mi amor?!” Something is wrong with the tire. He jumps out at the red light. It’s almost flat, he says. We pull to the roadside once the light turns green (though not very far over! 😛 ).

The tire is truly almost at the end of flatness. Good thing we’d had the windows down to enjoy the great weather, or he wouldn’t have heard it.

He starts to change the tire. The key to unlock the special bolts is missing, though everything else is in its proper place. Perhaps, when someone broke into her car a while back, they also stole the key. Ugh! We can’t change the tire.

Her friends who live nearby show up. They have three spare sets of tools. One of them works as the key. Phew!

Her mom shows up. She’s come to pick me up, because we didn’t know how long it would take, and we had been on the way to drop me off back at the house before they went elsewhere.

There are now six of us – and three cars – standing on the side of the road in Mexico around nine PM on a Saturday. At least we’re likely to be safe with so many people and cars!

Everything gets changed okay, and I help out everything back together in the back, reflective triangles and tire and tools and all (minus the missing key, of course).

Her mom and I go home, as do her friends, and my step-sister and her boyfriend go somewhere to have the tire fixed.

A massive piece of metal is removed. Glad that got handled… goodness. Thanks for keeping us safe. What a tire-ing day today has been.

Okay, then

Tonight, I saw this happening, asked about it, was told that she, the one I was asking, preferred Coca-Cola, clarified what I saw, laughed as everyone realized I wasn’t just talking nonsense, and then actually took a bite of the taco to discover whether it was any good.

And yes, it actually was good.

How bizarre, right?

Family

We met with my step-father’s sister and her husband the other morning for brunch, because my mom told me just the other day that they lived near where we would be staying in San Miguel. While at brunch, she mentioned that they lived very near the airport I’d be using for an early flight Friday morning, and invited us to go stay with them Thursday night, so my man didn’t have to make a two-hour drive to the airport before sunrise.

Thus we find ourselves here in the upstairs apartment that is connected to their cute house in their little suburb town. We had a wonderful time this evening and over dinner with them, staying up too late for all of us. After she went to bed and I went to get ready for bed, the boys stayed another hour, just chatting and having a grand old time. It was adorable.

Thank you, God, for this amazing day and evening. Please, grant us safe travels tomorrow, as well as great health for all of us. In your name, I pray. Amen.

Talaveras

Today, we went shopping for talaveras in Dolores Hidalgo, a town near Sam Miguel. If you are ever nearby, I highly recommend it. We found especially amazing work at Artesanías del Angel. We genuinely wanted to take the majority of it home with us, us was so gorgeous. Sure, we found great pieces at other workshops. But something about these pieces just hit home in a wonderful way. The longer we spent there, the more we wanted to get. We ended up spending far less money than I at all realized we were spending, and we got the following items:

Custom house address sign
House numbers (for on the fence)
Three custom University signs, talavera styled
Sun
3 Medium planters + water plates
Frog
Large planter
Cooking utensil rest
Multi-colored cuernas (longhorn skull)
Large sink basin
Metal sink basin mount

And Angel gave us the actual sink basin for free, because the one we really liked that was the big size we’d wanted was cracked. He at first wouldn’t let us have it, even, since it was cracked. But, once he realized it wasn’t for a backyard kitchen, but for a backyard basin just for washing hands or tools or whatever, he said we could have the sink and the mount for just the price of the mount itself. We gratefully and promptly accepted.

[This is where I would put some amazing photos of some of the wonderful pieces in the shop, if I hadn’t been so engrossed in everything around me, such that I have no photos I took! That’s how great it was!]

All in all, we spent a shockingly low amount of money, and we got some absolutely amazing pieces for our home and backyard. I am beyond excited for all of these pieces to bless our home. ¡Muchas gracias, Angel y los otros allí!

If you can ever go, please do! They have no website themselves, but you can find info for them from the city’s page or from Google Maps (with photos!).

Errands

I was struggling to get out of the house and get my errands done earlier today. Just as I was getting near the point of I must leave Now, my cousin reached out to me and my mom. She let us know that she was in town for the week and would like to see us, if possible. After a few further messages and a quick phone call, I hopped in the car and went and picked up my cousin.

She only had until about five o’clock, and it was already almost 3pm. But I picked her up – and she left her baby with her husband and in-laws! – and she went and ran my errands with me.

It sounds silly, perhaps, but I think we both had a really great time just being together again, and with no other real distractions, no one else for us to have to think about or check in upon. One of my errands happened to be to my mom’s office to pick up some pie, so my cousin got to see my mom for a little bit, even.

I dropped her off at their dinner reservation near 5:30pm, after a lovely time together, and with an intention of going to pick her up in the morning to come hang out with me at the house while I get things done here, both for the slumber party and for my trip. If the timing works well, she and I also will go to this wonderful shop that makes fabulous natural body products – oils, scrubs, lotions, soaps, etc. Then we can have some lovely tea/tisanes at the house together and just be all hyggelig together.

Thank you for this lovely day, God. Amen.

Travel

We are going to Mexico to visit his family. He is going for three weeks, and I am going for a week and a half. However, both our packing ended up looking like we’re moving there for a month (or two). Oh, the comedy in packing when driving somewhere versus flying… he leaves by 2:30am at the latest (within the next hour). I fly down on Friday. My carry-on had better be just a few little things, because my clothes, excepting the outfit for the plane, are all packed and in the car already. Lord, guide me, please.

Dear God, please, keep him safe in his travels today especially. Keep us both safe throughout all of our travels. Thank you for this life. Help us to bless the world through the gifts that you have given to us. In your name, I pray. Amen.

Happy Christmas

I had my man open tonight all his presents that I’d put under the tree. I don’t give Christmas presents, but I determined to have some fun for him this year, to let him be like a little kid and to shower him with gifts. Almost everything was either gained second-hand or from free gift cards, so the total cost was around $50, yet there were loads of presents for him to unwrap. He had said he liked opening packages, so I made sure he got to do just that tonight.

I also surprised him with my ticket to come visit with him in Mexico. (Granted, that one was several hundred dollars, but I’m also visiting my step-sister in Monterrey with the tickets, so it will be two trips for the usual price of the one, plus $40… not at all a bad deal, especially since I get to spend New Year’s with him, visit the town he loves, and see my step-sister and her family.)

He got me nervous by asking if I’d ‘approved this with anybody’. But, afterward, he said it was totally fine. His mom would be surprised, as he’d just told her two days ago that I wasn’t coming. But that everything would be okay. I’m still in a little bit of that space of unease, probably because it gave me the feeling of being in trouble, but I’m just going to let it be and see what happens. Hopefully, the concern will clear up on its own just by my allowing it to express itself.

I really hope he enjoyed everything I did for him tonight. And I’m really excited to set up the Play Station 3 that my mom gave us from her house (used to be my brother’s, but he didn’t need or really want it). We likely won’t get to play together until mid-January, after he’s back, but that’s okay. I’m excited about it, nonetheless.

Dear God, please, help us to rest well tonight. Keep us both safe in our travels. Help us to pursue and to fulfill your will by being our best selves. Thank you for everything. And please, heal my uncle – help him to join you fully. In your name, I pray. Amen.

Christmas

I can hardly believe tomorrow is Christmas Eve. Time has been flying in an odd way this season. Well, we shall do a bit more prep for his trip on Monday tomorrow. Otherwise, we get to hang out together and then go to midnight Mass. We might go to my brother’s for homemade takoyaki, but we’ll have to see. I really want us to be able just to hang it together tomorrow and the next day.

Thank you, God, for the blessings of today. And thank you, especially for the heat we now have in our home. In your name, I pray. Amen.
